Matthew Ray Barnett, 56, of Vallonia passed away at 6:28 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at his home. He had been ill for 2 years.
Matt was born on January 15, 1970, in Seymour, IN to the late Ray Barnett & Tina Miller Frazier. He was a graduate of Crothersville High School and Lincoln Technical Institute. He married Rachelle Leigh Gillaspy Barnett in Crothersville, IN on June 15, 1991, and she survives in Vallonia.
Matt was a mechanic at Hamilton Ford in Brownstown and then retired from REMC as a mechanic. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crothersville.
Matt enjoyed many hobbies and activities throughout his life. He was a proud member of the Southern Indiana Flying Eagles RC Club, where he enjoyed flying remote-controlled airplanes. He also loved fishing, hunting, playing cards, and singing karaoke. Music was a special part of his life, and he enjoyed playing the guitar. Some of his favorite times were spent sitting around a campfire, sharing stories and laughter with family and friends. Above all, he treasured spending time with his grandchildren and making special memories with them.
Survivors include his wife, Rachelle; sons: Dylan Scott (Shelby) Barnett & Drew Allan (Mary Kate) Barnett; grandchildren: Raylee, Jaxton, Olivia, Bryer, Everest, Millie, & Lakelee Barnett; brothers: Steve (Teresa) Barnett, Greg (Melanie) Barnett, Randy (Lisa) Barnett, BJ (Julia) Barnett, Tony Scifres, & Steve (Betty) Scifres; one sister, Stephanie Scifres.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral services for Matthew Ray Barnett will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Johnson Funeral Home with John Pierce officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to Driftwood Township Volunteer Fire Department or Jackson County Animal Rescue.
