Jeffrey Lynn Cowles, 70, of Vallonia, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his cabin on the river on August 30, 2025.
He was born on April 27, 1955, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Medora with his parents, Mary Cowles Mellencamp and Melvin Cowles, along with his brothers. The "Cowles boys" were well known in town for their mischievous streak and wild adventures.
On June 1, 1985, Jeff married Barbara (Cockerham) Cowles. They shared 40 years together, raising a family and building countless memories along the way. He worked as an electrician for many years until becoming medically disabled.
Jeff was a proud father to Justin Cowles (Jennifer), Jason Cowles (Susie), Jeremy Cockerham (Ronnie), Jerrica Cockerham, Jessica Frank (Josh), and Jackie Diener (DJ). His greatest joy in life was being "Papaw" to his 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He adored every one of them and was known as the best papaw anyone could ask for.
He is survived by his brothers, Jim Cowles (Mary), Rex "Moose" Cowles, and Bryan Cowles (Rhonda). When his father, Melvin, married Bea, Jeff was happy to gain four sisters at last, Rosemary Huff, Ronda Young, Teresa Green, and Tammy Jackson.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Cowles and Mary Mellencamp Cowles, and his brother Tracy Cowles.
Jeff was a man of many hobbies and passions. He was a skilled marksman who loved hunting and target shooting, and he enjoyed fishing along the river. He had a special talent for cooking hearty stews and soups, and he was also a proud collector of guns and old cars. Jeff loved spending time with his brothers and friends, whether traveling, visiting casinos, checking out pawn shops, or just sharing laughs. He was known for his laughter and his stories, and he never missed a chance to have a good time. Above all, he cherished his family and the many friendships he made throughout his life.
A celebration of Jeff's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Johnson Funeral Home in Vallonia. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, September 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. The burial will follow at Dixon Chapel/Proctor Cemetery.
