Betty I. Smallwood,83, of Brownstown, died at 9:30 a.m. December 14, 2013 at the Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown. She had been ill for 3 years. She was member of the Brownstown Nazarene Church. Mrs. Smallwood worked as a clerk at the Department of Agriculture U.S. Forest Service, she had also been a clerk at Vallonia Nursery and then retired from the State of Indiana. She was a member of the Jackson County Republican club, Brownstown Book Discussion Group, Co-Chairperson for Jackson County Bicentennial Commission State of Indiana, she was member of the Business and Professional Women, where she received the 1978 "Woman of the Year" Award, Girl Scout and 4-H Leader. Mrs. Smallwood loved to golf, fish, travel and visit with family in and out of state, she made dresses, quilted, loved to sing and read and study the bible. Mrs. Smallwood was born November 4, 1930 in Washington County, IN to the late Tom and Mattie Harris Wheeler. She lived most of her life in Jackson County. On October 9, 1948, in Brownstown, she married Harry Keith Smallwood and he survives. Other survivors include 3 children, Rhonda (James) Smallwood-Filiatreault of Lexington, South Carolina, Jeffrey (Marijane) Smallwood of Avon, IN, and Judith (George) Smallwood-Bobinski of Vestal, New York ; 1 sister, Ruth Foster of Vallonia; 6 grandchildren, Bill (DeeDee) Filiatreault, Brad (Dottie) Filiatreault, Hiley (Anthony) Killian, Kyle (Shannon) Smallwood, Allison (Brian) Kelvie, & Katie Bobinski. 7 great grandchildren survive. She was preceded in death by 6 brothers, Clifford, Herbert, Clarence Bob, Daniel, Paul, & Jimmy Wheeler; 4 sisters, Lucy Wheeler, Eva Ray, Alftetta Brewer & Omega Jackson. Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday, December 17 at 11 a.m. at Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Wheeler officiating. Friends may call Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 until service time. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown.
